Demand for Radiologists Softens, But Salaries Up Slightly
January 2010

While the demand for primary care physicians is far outpacing demand for specialists, compensation for radiologists actually increased slightly in 2008, according to a survey by the American Medical Group Association (AMGA).

According to the survey, compensation for both diagnostic and interventional radiologists increased over the previous year, with the median salary for an interventional radiologist the second highest among 30 specialties included in the survey.

A separate survey by physician recruiting firm Merritt Hawkins & Associates concluded that there has been a continued and sustained realignment of the physician recruiting market in recent years. Earlier this decade, demand for surgical and diagnostic specialists outpaced the demand for primary care physicians. Today, however, primary care docs are in greatest demand.
