The Senate Finance Committee in late April released a 48-page document providing options for overhauling the health care system. Among the proposals are ones that would require greater transparency in self-referrals for diagnostic imaging services and adherence to appropriateness criteria.
The document is the first of three outlining committee options for health care reform legislation expected over the next few weeks.

| The global economic crisis is expected to severely limit growth in the diagnostic imaging markets in Brazil, India, and Russia, particularly for advanced computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) modalities, according to a new report from Millennium Research Group. Combined revenues from CT and MRI scanner sales in those three countries are projected to shrink by almost 15 percent in 2009.

| Lower scan volumes for NightHawk Radiology (Coeur DAlene, Idaho) contributed to a 7 percent decline in revenue for the first quarter of 2009 when compared with the first quarter of 2008. Revenue for the quarter was $38.8 million, compared with $41.7 million for the same time the previous year. Scan volume for the quarter was 722,321 exams compared with 745,075 exams a year ago.
