The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 which was signed into law last month by President Obama contains significant new funding for Health Information Technology (HIT) through Medicare and Medicaid incentives.

A total of $19 billion is authorized for health information technology infrastructure and Medicare & Medicaid incentives to encourage hospitals, physicians (to include independent practice pathologists) and other providers (including free standing labs) to use HIT to electronically exchange patients' information.

In order to reach the goal of achieving an electronic medical records (EMR) for each person in the U.S. by 2014, the new law requires the government to take a leadership role to develop standards by 2010 that allow for the nationwide electronic exchange & use of health information to improve quality, care coordination, reduce medical errors and duplicative care.
