Richard S. Cooper

Richard S. Cooper is the chairman of the Health Law Practice Group at McDonald Hopkins Co. and has been a member of the firm’s board of directors for the past 12 years. He focuses his practice in healthcare law, representing clients in corporate, regulatory, reimbursement, contractual, strategic planning, and venture matters. Clients represented include laboratories, private practice and academic physician groups, imaging centers, surgery centers, physician networks, healthcare associations and societies, multispecialty clinics, medical staffs, physician-hospital organizations (PHOs), provider-owned PPOs and HMOs, outpatient medical facilities, physician-owned hospitals, home health providers, mental health/substance abuse facilities, occupational medicine companies, healthcare technology companies, healthcare distribution companies, and healthcare management companies.

Cooper has a national practice in the representation of laboratories and pathology groups. McDonald Hopkins represents more than 350 pathology groups and a substantial number of laboratories. Cooper is a frequent speaker on laboratory and pathology issues at state and national conferences and contributes often to laboratory and pathology publications. He is outside counsel for the American Pathology Foundation.

Cooper is the author of several monographs related to the pathology/laboratory arena. For the 14th consecutive year, he was named one of the “Best Lawyers in America” in the healthcare field by Corporate Counsel magazine (2007). He received his law degree cum laude from Georgetown University Law Center in 1981 and his bachelor’s degree cum laude from Syracuse University in 1978.
