Edwin R. Harned
Edwin R. Harned is president and CEO of Affiliated
Medical Services Laboratory Inc. in Wichita, Kansas. He began his healthcare career in 1964 as a graduate
medical technologist at the Oklahoma Osteopathic Hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Returning to his hometown of Wichita in 1965, Harned joined the Wichita
Clinic as a medical laboratory technologist. Called to active duty with the Air Force
for three years during the Vietnam War, he again returned to Wichita afterward
and was recruited to a new Wichita-based commercial reference laboratory venture,
Statlabs Inc. Harned served as executive vice president of sales and marketing
there for the next 14 years, until the company was sold to a major national
laboratory in 1983.
Recruited by a large local healthcare system in 1984, Harned
was a founder of AMS, which functions as a freestanding, commercial reference
laboratory. AMS is wholly owned by the Via Christi Health System, the largest
provider of healthcare services in Kansas.
